ABSTRACT

The process of adapting to higher officer … hadn’t been easy for Batogowski, and in some ways it made him feel lonely. He still lived in a suburban community west of the city, along with some twenty-five other middle and upper-middle managers at Sears, several of whom were the guys he drove to work with and played golf with on the weekends. But now he sensed he was supposed to isolate himself in the name of good management practice, and it made him sad. He knew it was hard for some of his pals who were still buyers or even the heads of departments to talk shop informally in front of him lately, so he figured that once the new house he was building in a different town was done, things would be easier for everyone …. [He] figured that [his boss] was pleased he was moving: it indicated his willingness to grow.
