ABSTRACT
Broadly considered, contrastive rhetoric examines differences and similarities in writing across cultures. Although mainly concerned in its first 20 years with the writing of Engiish-as-a-second-language (ESL) students at U.S. universities, contrastive rhetoric today contributes to knowledge about preferred patterns of writing in a variety of “English-for-specific-purposes” situations with the goal of helping teachers and students around the world.
