ABSTRACT

From its inception, Success for All (SFA) has been first and foremost a program of research. It was conceived, developed, and evaluated within a federally funded research center, currently called the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk, at Johns Hopkins University. SFA is arguably the most extensively evaluated school reform model ever to exist; dozens of studies, done by researchers in many locations within the United States are summarized in this chapter and chapter 3. Based on this research, SFA was cited as one of only two elementary comprehensive designs that meets the highest standards for research in a review of 24 well-known programs done by the American Institutes of Research (Herman, 1999). In addition, studies of SFA adaptations in five other countries appear in chapters 4 through 8.
