ABSTRACT

Medication adherence may be defined as “the accurate use of medication, that is, taking the appropriate number of doses at the right time in the amount prescribed by a physician” (Park & Mayhorn, 1996, p. 95). Failure to take medication as prescribed has often been described as a major reason for failed therapy (Cramer, 1995). Furthermore, mistakes in taking medication may cost billions of dollars per year in the United States in lost productivity and increased annual medical costs (Park & Jones, 1997).
