A quick perusal of news coverage of science issues shows that uncertainty is a common element Consider some of the more recent issues in the news: Is Mad Cow disease transmissible to humans and, if so, how does transmission occur? Is genetically engineered food safe? What do we know about the amounts and distribution of toxic chemicals being used and released into the environment, and what are their potential impacts? Which foods cause cancer or help impede its development?
