ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to conceptualize the construct of ethnic identity and begin the process of definition so that theoretical ideas from this area of study can be applied to school settings. The chapter is divided into four sections: a review of the literature in human development and ethnic identity; the development of an operational definition; the role of schooling in the formation and development of students’ ethnic identity; and implications for school practices.
