ABSTRACT

The breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 was a critical turning point in the development of a national identity for Ukraine. Events of that year offered the opportunity for the reemergence of Ukrainian national identity, for the development of economic, political, and educational policies supportive of the contemporary Ukraine. A key element in the emergence of “new” Ukraine is the revitalization of the Ukrainian language. However, due to a centuries-long policy of suppression of the Ukrainian language, progress in the implementation of a new language policy has been slow.
