ABSTRACT

According to some estimates, racial minorities will constitute nearly 50% of the U.S. population by 2050 (American Psychological Association, 1997). The changing ethnic composition may intensify the controversy over the generalizability of research findings based on White samples to individuals whose values and beliefs may be shaped as much by their own subcultures as by the mainstream culture. For this reason, it may be unwise to ignore important differences between these groups and the mainstream culture.
