ABSTRACT

The psychological assessment of Jews in the United States did not get off to an auspicious start. Early in the century, Henry Goddard tested Jewish immigrants as they came through Ellis Island and concluded that 83% were “feeble-minded,” with 76% being “morons” and 7% “imbeciles” (Goddard, 1917). Such research was used to document the undesirability of Jews to justify closing the doors of immigration. This is a good example of how not to do multicultural assessment.
