ABSTRACT

In a book written by those who have been influenced by Charles Hulin, it seems fitting to describe those who influenced him. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to trace the Hulin family tree, working backward from Hulin to the taproot, Wilhelm Wundt. This chapter is organized into three sections. In the first section, the historical figures in the family tree, individuals now deceased, are described. This section describes the research careers of each of these historical figures. The second section of the chapter focuses on Hulin and his most important influence, his advisor, Patricia Cain Smith. In this section, the research careers of Smith and Hulin are briefly summarized and then, in their own words, they describe the influence of their predecessors in the family tree. The final section of the chapter provides a summary of lessons learned for Industrial and Organizational (I-O) Psychology from an analysis of the family tree.
