ABSTRACT
All scientists choose, adapt, and create tools appropriate to their reading of problems and opportunities in their fields. In turn, new or adapted tools can change the questions asked and the answers given, leading to new research cycles. The dialectic between the evolution of tools and the refinement of problems characterizes growth in a field.
