ABSTRACT

The college ESL population has been steadily increasing for a number of years (Crandall, 1993), and it has been predicted that by the 21 st century, approximately 50% of all undergraduates in U.S. colleges and universities will come from homes where English is a second or foreign language (City University of New York, 1994). Given this prediction, what does the future hold for ESL instruction in general and for content-based instruction in particular? What skills will ESL students need to be successful in the academic and workforce environments of the 21st century?
