ABSTRACT

The theme for a recent Academy of Management Meeting, “What Matters Most” provides the appropriate backdrop for this book. The book’s premise is that a disconnect exists between the development and transference of management theory into common practice. More specifically, Vanetti’s chapter provides an overview of why some management research is adopted by practitioners, whereas other research is overlooked. Vanetti writes primarily from the perspective of a practitioner, but I provide a viewpoint of this knowledge disconnect from the vantage point of an academic specializing in organizational research. Through the use of theory and example, I discuss ways that academics can foster increased awareness, relevance, and subsequent acceptance of their work by the practitioner audience.
