ABSTRACT

You are six years old, and a great lover of animals. For your birthday, you receive a fishtank and a tiny goldfish, the first pet that is entirely your responsibility. You want the little fish to grow, so that you’ll know it's healthy. You are certain that small animals need to eat a great deal in order to grow. Therefore, you drop food into the tank several times a day. To your great surprise and disappointment, the fish does not thrive, and in fact it dies before the week is out. You ask your parents what went wrong, and they tell you that fish died because there was too much uneaten food in the water. A few weeks later, you feel ready to care for another fish, and this time, you are very, very careful with the amount of food.
