ABSTRACT

Comprehensive descriptions of the process and stages of lifelong learning are available in numerous scholarly books. We examined and evaluated what others had written, but our sense was that such descriptions failed to capture the richness and complexity of what we have experienced. Thus, the contents of this chapter do not model a conventional synthetic approach. We felt challenged to go beyond those more dispassionate accounts and describe our experiences of lifelong learning and extract the commonalities of two professional educators. We wanted to breathe life into the concept of lifelong learning and illustrate how the process twists and turns, involves other people, consists of formal and informal learning, and reflects aspirations or motivations. In this chapter, we expose you to a glimpse of our lives—a slice of our lifelong learning—and we hope you gain some insight from viewing our journey. You might even discover lessons similar to your own experiences.
