ABSTRACT

The healthfinder® Web site (https://www.healthfinder.gov) is the official federal consumer health gateway. Launched in 1997 by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Vice President, healthfinder.gov is developed and maintained by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), located within the Office of Public Health and Science, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The site had 1.7 million visits in 1997 and grew to 4.3 million visits in 1999. In 2001, healthfinder.gov has been serving an average of more than 350,000 users each month. As of April 2001, healthfinder.gov has more than 4,500 reviewed resources from 1,850 reliable organizations. The site is updated weekly by a team of content managers, is reviewed monthly by a steering committee with representatives from over 30 federal agencies, and is monitored monthly by an automated log that tracks the site’s usage statistics.
