ABSTRACT

We can describe Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) as the effort to understand and improve decision making in field settings, particularly by helping people more quickly develop expertise and apply it to the challenges they face. One of the significant features of the field of NDM is that it seeks explicitly to understand how people handle complex tasks and environments. Instead of trying to reduce these to variables that can be studied at leisure, NDM examines the phenomena themselves in the context of the situations where they are found, and uses this understanding to develop useful types of tools, training, and supports.
