ABSTRACT

The development of good judgment and decision-making skills is essential for individuals to function well in society. Although various approaches have been developed to train these skills, it has been difficult to empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches. In this chapter, we describe a decision skills training approach that attempts to facilitate the development of the decision maker's domain expertise. We briefly review the types of approaches that have been used previously to train decision-making skills before we present the rationale for the development of our approach. We also describe the training tools we have developed and some of the preliminary data we have obtained to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach. In addition, we discuss future directions for research on how to improve judgment and decision-making skills.
