ABSTRACT
It is the holidays, and as I see Christmas decorations everywhere, hear the carols blaring from loudspeakers perched on telephone poles—the commercial blitzkrieg that comes this time of year—inevitably my thoughts turn to my family. After all, who doesn’t associate family with the holidays? And whether thoughts are pleasant or not so pleasant, often it seems that these are the ties that bind.
