ABSTRACT
Citizenship education has always been at the center of the public school curriculum in this country. The goal of citizenship education, regardless of grade level, has been to create democratic citizens, 1 a concept that seems simple enough on the surface, yet has remained fertile ground for divergent thoughts and recommendations. This chapter discusses citizenship education as it relates to the elementary school setting, 2 describing past and current practice and examining the research base that supports this practice.
