ABSTRACT

Although this chapter addresses the use of task-based grammar instruction in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, many considerations also apply to classrooms in English as a second language (ESL) settings where learners particularly need to build grammatical accuracy. Structure-based tasks designed to promote awareness of target grammar forms are presented as useful pedagogy for providing communicative reinforcement of instructed grammar points, an important consideration because grammar teaching is characteristic of many EFL classrooms and of academic ESL programs as well. Procedures for the creation of course-specific structure-based tasks are also discussed.
