ABSTRACT

The study reported in this chapter uses data from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examinations Survey (NHANES) Epidemiologic Follow-Up Study. The study is based on a representative sample of the US population, generalizations are not restricted to Southern California. Further, the study reports outcomes using the Health Utilities Index (HUI) developed by Torrance and Associates. The HUI is a similar method of providing quality-adjusted survival estimates to that used in the previous study. Variation in the methods helps support the generalizability of the results. Analysis suggests that subjects who were lost to follow-up were more likely to have died than those who were successfully traced. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we evaluated differences between the health status for men and women in the United States. In order to evaluate the results, the chapter first considers the issue of mortality differences.
