ABSTRACT

The most obvious way to develop a definition of age would be to count the number of years an individual has lived. As individuals age, there is an increased incidence of autoimmune disease and autoantibody formation. The major component of the immune system that tends to change during the aging process is the T lymphocyte population. Consideration of factors such as amelioration of stress and proper nutrition that maintains immune system function is necessary, as both are capable of modifying immune system function. Nutritional factors that have been evaluated for their effect on immune system function include the amount of food consumed as well as components of the diet including protein, total calories, minerals, and vitamins. The mechanism of the longevity needs to be determined, and it is likely that maintaining a high level of immune system function will be found to contribute to longevity.
