ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the amount of time children spend on various media and the reasons why they use these media. Unlike most previous studies on these issues, the present study includes interactive media (i.e., electronic games, PCs, and the Internet), which have recently gained much importance in children’s lives. The general question of this chapter is whether the rise of interactive media has had substantial consequences for children’s media time expenditure and the functions fulfilled by various media. How much time do children spend on interactive media in comparison with other media, and for which purposes do they use interactive media, again as compared to other media?
