ABSTRACT
The education system in Latvia plays an increasingly important role in facilitating competence in Latvian as a second language for children of other (i.e. non-ethnic Latvian) nationalities. In 1998 the Latvian Saeima (Parliament) worked on two new laws which include special provisions for the linguistic integration of Latvian society-the Education Law and the Law on State Language.
