ABSTRACT
The first part consists of the summing up of the book Penpoints, gunpoints, and dreams, Towards a critical theory of the arts and the state in Africa (Clarendon Press, 1998), which builds on a series of lectures given at the University of Oxford. This is followed by the answers to three questions put to Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o by Robert Phillipson.
