ABSTRACT

The long period of social democrat rule in Sweden was imbued with a folk ideology, introduced in 1928 by the then Prime Minister, Per Albin Hansson, and successively elaborated upon by other politicians. According to this ideology, the purpose of social democratic policy was to change society into ‘a good home for all citizens’. This idea of a ‘folk home’ was widely used to bring about the citizens’ support for radical change. At a time when society was being redesigned by social reforms, citizens’ loyalty towards the state was indispensable.
