ABSTRACT

Still not too long ago, a statement such as the one above might have raised more than a few eyebrows. Uncomfortable echoes of discredited theories of geographical and biological determinism, romantic nationalism, and the like might have resonated in people’s minds. Not so today. Today, as we step into the new millennium, it is becoming increasingly clear that all forms of the diversity of life on Earth-linguistic, cultural, and biological-are intrinsically related and interconnected, and that they share a common fate (Maffi, 1998, Maffi, ed., in press, Posey, 1999).
