ABSTRACT

The study in this chapter reports on the adjustments of adults with and without disabilities who recently graduated from a community college. The study is notable in that previous follow-ups of former special education students found uniformly dismal outcomes (Affleck, Edgar, Levine, & Kortering, 1990; Hasazi, Gordon, & Roe, 1985; Mithaug & Horiuchi, 1983; Mithaug, Horiuchi, & Fanning, 1985; Mithaug, Hoiruchi, & McNulty, 1987; Neel, Meadows, Levine, & Edgar, 1988; Scuccimarra & Speece, 1990). Indeed, the conclusion from much of that research was that prospects for youth with disabilities would decline rather than improve as students matured (Chadsey-Rusch, Rusch, & O’Reilly, 1991; Wehmeyer, 1996).
