ABSTRACT

In chapter 1, this volume, several examples are given of how source monitoring can disrupt everyday functioning in both cognitive and social domains. As described, the reader will see examples throughout the book of the importance of source monitoring in children’s acquisition of knowledge, organizational skills, reasoning, and event memory. Before examining these topics in detail, however, a theoretical overview of source monitoring is necessary. This chapter is intended to put the research discussed in the following chapters in perspective and to allow the reader to review the work with a critical and informed eye.
