ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some of the basic themes in this book—exclusionary criteria as part of the definition of SLI (specific language impairment), the nature of the linguistic deficits found in SLI—in light of other types of cognitive disorders. It is argued that the study of SLI can benefit from the ways in which similar fundamental issues have been dealt with in the study of other disorders. The approach is neuropsychological, that is, it is concerned with brain-behavior relations as they are revealed through the study of SLI.
