ABSTRACT

The analysis of representation is undoubtedly one of the most important questions in psychology. It has been addressed by several authors, starting with Wallon, Claparéde, and Freud and it is still a topical issue today, as can be seen from the polemic between the defenders of the image-schema approach (Mandler, 1983, 1992a, 1992b, 1992c, 1998) and those of the actiontheoretical approach (Müller & Overton, 1998; Müller, Sokol, & Overton, 1998b). In spite of all these efforts, it remains an open problem to which different schools of thought provide their own meanings and solutions, depending on their particular theoretical and epistemological bent.
