ABSTRACT

Recipient response indicates how she or he has taken the question. In example 5, an exchange between two people working in a pizza palor, the asker does not use any vocal intonation that might cause the question to sound as if he is accusing the recipient of anything. However, the recipient’s response indicates he appears to have heard an accusation (“What’s wrong with it?”). In Example 6, the response shows a problem by the dispreferred-shaped response (Pomerantz, 1984).
