ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the topic of the cross-border impact of TV using a more objective and less normative approach. It raises the possibility that the effects found are not only very weak, but could be due to some other factors that may be influencing the audience to seek and view foreign TV programs. The various views held regarding the effect of foreign TV enable us to develop expectations about the results of our study. Meta-analysis is a general procedure for analyzing results across studies. In order to be useful, a study had to report results in some quantitative form. Most investigators relied on a group-distributed but self-administered survey method to collect data about individuals. The researchers, however, differed in their measurement of foreign TV exposure and varied in their concern with content specificity. The results of this endeavor reveal that empirical studies about the impact of foreign TV on a domestic audience are scarce.
