ABSTRACT

The first memory clinic was developed in the United States in the mid-1970s. In the United Kingdom, a memory clinic was established at University College Hospital, London, the St. Pancras Clinic, in 1983. The Maudsley Hospital followed in 1984. Currently there are at least 23 memory clinics in the United Kingdom, with clinics in Europe, Australia, and the United States (Sutton et al., 1998; Wright & Lindesay, 1995). Statistics suggest that the number of memory clinics may be on the increase. In a 1995 survey of UK memory clinics, it was found that 60% of memory clinics had been set up in the previous 3 years (Lindesay, 1995).
