ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to develop a theoretical framework that helps us to deWne the new literacies of Internet technologies. We organize this theoretical framework around a set of central principles that inform our understanding of the new literacies emerging from Internet technologies. We argue that traditional deWnitions of literacy must be expanded if we are to understand the new literacies required to effectively use information and communication technology (ICT), such as the Internet, that continually changes. Along the way, we argue that multiple ways of understanding and communicating are blended in the new literacies of ICT. We also argue that both teaching and learning will need to be transformed if teachers wish to prepare students for their literacy futures. Finally, we argue that it is essential for every literacy researcher to bring their special insights to the study of literacy within Internet technologies if we are to fully understand literacy in our changing world.
