ABSTRACT

Music, in its many forms, has been a tool of literacy and a source for expression and communication throughout history, from disseminating information in the form of ballads, to the recounting of events and emotions of history through song. Musicologists have even posed the question, “Is there such a thing as autonomous music; a division between music and society?” (Leppert & McLary, 1987, p. 6). Music serves many functions in our lives. Merriam (1964, cited in Campbell & Scott-Kassnea, 1995) outlined these various functions of music as follows:
