ABSTRACT

We do not often think of news in emotional terms. As a media genre, news is conceptualized primarily as a vehicle for information transmission. Therefore, much of journalism and communication research has focused on the cognitive consequences of news presentations, with very little attention paid to affective considerations. Dolf Zillmann was among the first to problematize the involvement of emotion in processing news stimuli from the media. He has brought to the fore the mediating role played by emotion in profoundly shaping how, and even what, we learn from the news.
