ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author emphasizes how Leonard Covello continually returned to his own roots: first as an immigrant student and later as a teacher working with Italian immigrants. In Teacher With a Heart, the author referred to a number of schools in New York City that are working to realize a vision similar to Covello. Covello was a progressive educator whose vision was rooted in the belief that to educate the children of a community, the school must actively seek to connect with and become a resource for that community. Nadelstern, who knows and admires Covello’s work, highlights the following as Covello’s key contribution: Covello’s practice as an educator consistently modeled, what he believed about the world. The author's tribute to Leonard Covello has rebuilt an important link between the history of progressive education and contemporary work.
