ABSTRACT

Children waiting for or receiving organ transplantation face many physical, emotional, social, developmental, and cognitive challenges. For most children, transplantation follows a progressive and debilitating physical health condition. They are confronted first with numerous demands associated withmanaging their chronic illness and then the anxiety and uncertainty of transplantation. Transplantation provides renewed hope and improved quality of life for most children, yet it simultaneously introduces new challenges to its young recipients. Throughout this process, children and their families must navigate a complex web of transplantation-from initial evaluation to long-term recovery.
