ABSTRACT

A lead character on a TV series particularly popular with adult males was diagnosedwith prostate cancer. For 12 episodes, that storyline onNYPD Bluewas blended among the series’ typical stories. The character progressed through symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, surgery, complications, and recovery. Viewers could learn about PSA testing, incontinence, pain, erectile dystunction, and the value of talking with others. Because social researchers were not involved in the development of that storyline, however, an opportunity for concurrent entertainment-education (E-E) research was lost.
