ABSTRACT

Marilyn Sternglass chronicles the journey of a student from the Dominican Republic who failed to pass a standardized writing assessment test but who moved on to major in psychology as well as to achieve a Master’s degree in that field. Focusing on how writing functioned as a way for Delores to learn, Marilyn also highlights the critical role faculty played in initiating Delores into the demands of disciplinary work. These instructors encouraged her development as an independent researcher and acknowledged the value of her cultural background in the creation of new knowledge.
