ABSTRACT

Quality children’s literature, both expository and narrative, needs to be an important part of literacy instruction at school and in the home (Scharer, 1992). The use of children’s literature provides authentic learning experiences and activities to teach and foster literacy development. This chapter focuses on the importance of children’s literature in literacy instruction at home and in the school. First, we will review research about literature-based instruction in general; second, we will concentrate on aspects of storybook reading in the classroom and at home. Third, we will draw conclusions concerning literature-based instruction and storybook reading at school and the implications for home.
