ABSTRACT

At its simplest, CORI attempts to provide an atmosphere of inquiry and exploration that helps draw students into what, for many, is a new or poorly developed domain, the world of reading. CORI exercises the mind in order to motivate students to accept, learn, and use reading skills. The science component of CORI parallels its overall philosophy in that hands-on exploration, questioning, and content-based inquiry about the biological world motivate students to incorporate into their lives the empowerment of reading. The philosophy that drives the science component parallels CORI in that it is, at its core, Concept-Oriented Science Instruction (COSI).
