ABSTRACT

Australia is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse nations in the world. Therein lies both a great strength and a fundamental problem. Its diversity affects both the understanding and ways of responding to the issue of family violence. The fact that Australians come from such divergent cultures creates communication barriers when groups try to agree on basic definitions and proper responses to maltreatment Additionally, due to its many truly remote settings, the very land itself makes combating family violence difficult. Isolation affects both the genesis of the problems and efforts to respond to individuals seeking relief and protection.
