ABSTRACT

The System for Coding Interactions in Dyads (SCID) is a global coding system, designed to capture elements of dyadic and individual communication behaviors within the context of couples’ problem discussions. Recent work has suggested that it is important to study specific elements of couple communication that go beyond constructs of positivity and negativity (Fincham, 1998). As such, this system was primarily designed to focus on dynamics of power and control within couple relationships, in addition to behaviors that are linked with overall couple stability and relationship quality. The SCID includes an assessment of power behaviors such as verbal aggression, coerciveness, and control. It also assesses elements of couple behavior and communication that may be related to domestic violence and other indicators of relationship power dynamics. These elements include negative escalation, conflict management style, and balance of power. The SCID also assesses behaviors related to the overall quality of couple relationships, such as support, problem-solving communication, and cohesiveness. There are both individual codes and dyadic, couple-based codes within the system.
