ABSTRACT
2Starting from an examination of two modern papers, about situation awareness and about allocation of function in human-machine systems, this paper examines the requirements for a quantitative predictive model of rule-based behaviour. It shows that much relevant empirical evidence exists in papers of 30 to 40 years ago, and that there has been convergence both of theory and data. It offers tentative guidelines towards the development of a predictive model.
