ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I address three focus questions in relation to the development of a university immersion teacher education program called Language and Culture Initial Teacher Education Program (LACITEP). LACITEP is a 4-year Bachelor of Education degree program in which, depending on the semester, between 50% and 100% of the courses are delivered through the medium of Japanese to native speakers of English. The three questions that I deal with are (a) What characterises this innovative immersion teacher education program in Australia?; (b) How have those innovations been documented in terms of effectiveness?; and (c) What challenges are faced in implementing such a program as LACITEP?
