ABSTRACT

How does technology influence work-life integration? New technologiesespecially advances in telecommunication and information technology-have had profound impacts on the mix of jobs in the economies of the United States and other industrialized nations, on how work is organized, and on people’s experience at work. In this chapter we offer a framework for considering the relationship between technology and work-life integration. We draw from a contextualist perspective on technology (Adler, 1992) to advance a theory that offers few generalizations and instead emphasizes the microdynamics through which technology affects the balance between work and life outside of work.
