ABSTRACT

Persuading others to think or act in certain ways can be very difficult to accomplish. For example, how would you persuade teenagers not to smoke cigarettes? Many people suggest that the best way to convince others not to engage in this risky behavior is to have a serious, somber conversation in which the facts about the effects of smoking on health and life expectancy are described and discussed. This kind of plain talk may be impressive to some adults, but do such arguments convince teenagers?
